Xu Xiang Zhai Vegetarian Buffet

"You're still vegetarian? In Beijing? What on earth do you eat?!"

This is the response I almost always get when a friend comes to visit me. Oh, if they only knew of Xu Xiang Zhai (叙香斋) by the Lama Temple (雍和宮) that has an excellent buffet for only RMB68. I suppose that wouldn't interest the regular omnivore, but the rest of us will agree that hearing vegetarian and buffet in the same sentence is a rarity.

The restaurant has an ala carte menu, however, most of its patrons come for their lunch or dinner buffet. Their vast selection puts a gleam on my face every time I go there. Comforting soups, exotic mushrooms, noodles, salads, sushi, dessert and even a mini hotpot for your table, if you like.

I'm not certain but I think their dishes are vegan as most Chinese vegetarian restaurants usually are. Which leads me to their egg tarts. Little tarts of light puff pastry filled with a creamy custard still warm from the heat of the oven. When JD, my carnivorous half, arrives at the restaurant, the first place he'll eagerly head to is the dessert spread and load up on these egg tarts before the rest of the customers devour them, leaving me to secure our already reserved table.

Get there early (lunch from 12pm-2pm and dinner from 5:30pm til closing) and don't forget to reserve a table before you go!
